Hezbollah launched a barrage of strikes at Israel overnight in retaliation for the killing of a top military commander last month. Israel launched what it called “preemptive strikes” against the group prior to the attack, saying it destroyed rocket launchers.
The Iran-backed Islamist group called the strikes the “first phase” of its responsse to Israel, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed, “This is not the end.” But the two sides appeared to avoid immediately escalating into a wider war.
This was one of the largest exchanges yet after months of clashes. Hezbollah, which has a formidable arsenal of weapons, has said its attacks on Israel are in solidarity with Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza.
Meanwhile, talks on a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal will extend into the coming days with Israel and Hamas negotiating through mediators, a US official told CNN.
