I've always wondered about this phenomenon. Politicians and media constantly spew absurd nonsense that nobody would believe. Who are they fooling?

The best explanation is the Sucker Filter, which was first observed in ordinary Nigerian Prince swindlers. They make absurd claims in every email. Nobody would believe that shit!

Swindlers and politicians know that you can fool some of the people all of the time. Each absurd claim is intended to SELECT the people who fall for this particular kind of nonsense, and more importantly to REJECT the people who see the craziness of this particular kind. The politician or swindler doesn't want to waste effort cultivating observant people.

Efficient scamming, like efficient manufacturing, requires quality control.

The double standard is alive and well in government. I thought perhaps Bowman was rushing to vote to oppose the banning of the USA use of cluster bombs. But ever the "hero," he was voting to keep the government running! Someone should tell him that his vote was unnecessary. The Constitution requires the USA government to make good on its debts.
