To tack on the usual digression: when looking up this story, I learned that "former longtime US Senator Chris Dodd" is another honoree. This brought back a memory of a "Democracy Now" segment that made me think twice about Amy Goodman after years of watching and admiring her, mostly uncritically-- except for her reprehensible refusal to honestly report on the events of September 11, 2001.
It must have been 2011, because the segment discussed Dodd's upcoming retirement from the Senate. Amy explored the possibility that Dodd would use his remaining time in the Senate to fiercely lobby for the legislative financial reform measures Dodd supposedly championed, but had been constrained from pursuing vigorously for political reasons.
I can't remember her guests, and can't be bothered looking it up. But they bought into the conventional political-science premise or scenario that a career politician leaving office was finally, if theoretically, free and empowered to take bold risks without fear or favor. Their working assumption was that Dodd was manifestly a conscientious "good guy" who might just surprise everybody by Doing the Right Thing and letting the chips fall where they may.
I was incredulous. I told the TV, "Amy, you're having a Pollyanna dream! Dodd ain't gonna see his departure from the Senate as a long-overdue and welcome chance to tear up the pea patch. He'll just slide out graciously to begin a new life with some lucrative sinecure-- count on it!"
Indeed, Dodd presumably deeply disappointed Amy by failing to go out with a bang as she optimistically hoped, if not predicted.
