Imagine if we spent the cost of one aircraft carrier on providing adequate staff for schools, to include Mental Health services, Social workers, and School RNs. And thus when someone says, "I'm really worried about this kid who's depressed and suicidal and fixated on guns." there would be resources to assist them.
And one other idea that might assist might be safe rooms in every class. A refuge for all students and staff to have a place to go into that would protect from gunfire. "Walk, don't run!"
Good points, I think there are warning signs and cries for help---even if adults do catch these signs, there is little to do for the young people. (and others)
I agree. USG basically wants to disarm the population because they NEVER look at the root causes of WHY someone would go and shoot up a school, they just jump to a gun grab. Democrats use this highly polarizing emotional issue to fundraise and get votes ONLY because of course we remember when obama had a super majority and did nothing about assault weapons. The left has made me go right... I am more rabidly pro2A than ever before because of course we also saw what happened in Shanghai, Australia NZ etc during their commie covid craze.
I don't think the mass shootings that have increased steadily in number since the 1960s have much if anything to do with the availability of guns. I see it as a result of an incredibly sick and violent society, shaped by our endless wars and terrorizing of other countries, for starters. So many other things, as you mention, the loss of hope; our society could not be more depraved, shallow and ignorant. And then there is the angle that the powers that be do commit terrorist acts on the public to keep us in a state of shock and confusion. If you notice, the rashes of many of these shootings coincide with things they would like to distract us from. And there are more and more things they need to distract us from.
Until and if this broken promised land confronts and does something about mental illness, the socio-economic divide, lack of decent employment, domestic/sexual/child abuse guns will be a 'thing'. When a society gives awards to movies and video games that depict some of the most violent scenarios which incorporate guns and weapons of all manner, killings and brutality that should be incomprehensible- it has failed utterly and legislating guns out of the equation is a pathetic, superficial joke to win votes. These dis United States are all about violence and guns are always the weapon of choice- from handguns to bombs. The clean up needs to happen in our hearts. A nation whose largest portion of discretionary (!) income goes to the military has NO INTENTION of doing anything about domestic violence (that includes gun violence).
I wish I could have a better, happier POV but I've been sick of this for my entire (70 years) on this planet. It's all talk. The scary thing is the truth in this the Gospel of St. Matthew that 'those who live by the sword, die by the sword'. Our 'leaders' are willing to risk a nuclear holocaust here and now.
And, I might add, at the risk of being pounced on- I believe many shootings in this country (particularly those the legacy media drags us through with every bullet casing and teddy bear) are designed intentionally to weaken our resolve and add to the fear porn in which we are already drowning.
I am basically of the mind that the events that happen (9/11, Covid, shootings, etc) are exploited for their nefarious agendas. The PTB won't ever do anything to help these situations because how else would they divide we workers/citizens?
Not sure what the answer is to stop America’s violent behavior, but doing nothing sure isn’t working. Violent video games, access to military style weapons, lack of compassion for others, poverty, endless wars, discrimination, no hope for the future, and a government who doesn’t care about us may all be contributing factors?
yes, all of that. Will it take community activism across political divides? The feds aren't going to do anything substantive, f history is any indication.
Honestly, until we embrace co-creation (where any and everything that happens TO US is, in some way, happening because we are co-creating it) as a truth, we can never move past the adolescent stage that our western culture seems stuck in. As long as there is someone else to blame, and we don't have be responsible for what we are creating, both in our own lives and collectively, the 6th great extinction may be the end of "civilized" humanity.
Mass shootings in the U.S. are the U.S. version of suicide bombings in other countries. Now, Back to the Future: Ukraine (or Taiwan next) escalates to the nuclear Armageddon, or, in a few more generations, the climate crisis brings down civilization. Desperate times are upon us. How do we explain to our grandchildren? And which well written, truthful, children's book do we use?
Thank you Cindy, for this discussion; thanks to participants in it as well: may I recommend, inclusion in it, of Russell Brand's summoning response to the terrible events in Texas, and his observations concerning media - distributed reactions, vis a vis authentic human feelings ?
My view from the distant location of Europe may be distorted, but for me the regular mass shootings appear to be just another symptom or manifestation of an inherently violent society with limited cohesion.
Why is US society violent? It’s a matter of history (genocide of Native Americans, slavery of kidnapped Africans), and of cultural paradigms created by the needs of capitalist profiteering and perpetuated by a media machine (Hollywood, TV, "newspapers of record"), which is second to none.
It’s also a matter of an unnatural urban lifestyle (noise, pollution, not enough sleep, not enough exercise), loss of any connection with nature (which could soothe people down), inequality or discrimination, and brutal competition (dog eat dog), factors which all are increasing social tensions and make people mentally sick.
I think this will solve the problem on this thread.
The 2nd amendment does not give to any person any rights. It's purpose is to protect the ability of any state to raise it's militia, not to frustrate the ability of any state to keep it's cities safe as implied by police powers.
And individual may have some right to possess a weapon but it is not based on the 2nd amendment.
Any federal rule that relates to weapons can be objected to by any state on the claim that it interferes with their ability to raise a militia.
No one actually needs an AR-15 or AK-47 or an Assault rifles with numerous rounds of bullets!😡👎
Ban all these weapons of mass destruction!
Childrens lives matter!
But US being the worlds number one arms dealer, and invading every country, we are in the last throwz of capitalism crashing. Nothing left for the Oligarchs but militarism!
No addressing income inequality. No program to feed the 17 million children who go to bed each night hungry. No min. wage of $15 an hour to counter 44 years of wage stagnation. No respite from gas prices $7+ a gallon...
I live in MA. I was school teacher for 17 years. Many friends are still teaching. I had this horrible thought today. What if empire "controllers" are using School shootings as a strategy to kill public education? I worry schools have become the battlefield in the new civil war,
the culture war created to enable the class war.
Some states are demanding teachers to carry guns!
Many teachers want and asked for since Columbine, Colorado,
metal detectors, cameras at the doors,
and a secuirty guard all day every day year round.
Parents already talking about they don't want their kids to attend public
we had a scare in our very low-crime town last Sunday---we had our annual Fiesta Days carnival back after 2 years and some idiot shot somebody in the leg (he meant to kill him), my 10 year old grandson and other relatives were there when it happened. There was a panicked stampede. It was just a few days after Uvalde. I don't want to let anyone I love ot of my sight.. I already lost one dear loved one to war violence.
I have followed you, your Green Party Run with Cyn.McK. and knew about your son. I cry every time i think about it. My dad was veteran in US Army, Korean War, Chosin Few. I have lots of teacher friends, and my own great-nieces/nephews tell me their friends parents are too scared to go back to school. Too many suffering horrible PTSD. When i taught those 17 years, especially the last 10 years, most of the kids were "fatherless", divorced, and or their fathers never involved in their lives, so these kids are always so depressed, angry, their mothers work 2-3 jobs, and kids in school extended days from 7AM to 6pm. Not enough mental health, counselors, or really qualified people to handle it. I worry the most about the childrens futures. I was born in 1963, grew up in Boston area, and seeing all these dark times, changes, is truly shocking. Thanks so much for your reply, for all you do for PEACE, and so glad you are on Substack. Still think you should run as a green or Independent 2024, just to piss off empire and get all your issues out there! But then I feel worried at same time, too many in Empire would try to silence you, just like they did with all the other peacemakers from 60's, 70's. Besides, your grandkids need you the most :-) <3
Right on Cindy!

I agree, I think instead of being sad, the democrats are thrilled, as they were when Roe was overturned.
yup. now they can virtue signal with the predictable moral superiority and millions will follow. ugh

The government has proven that it cannot be trusted with arms. It needs to be disarmed.
AMEN

just some random thoughts:

Until the adrenaline levels are too high to bear.
thanks for this perspective Wolf and joining us from Europe! We must look pretty ridiculous.
also, not for nothing, fetanyl, heroine or crack were just DE-CRIMINALIZED in Canada... plus WIDE OPEN BORDERS ..... .........
Gun Free Zones attract shooters.

Simple.
If only this comment will make people stop murdering others. Not so simple, unfortunately,
Not to mention, 6 out of 10 gun-related deaths are suicides - a fact rarely (if ever) mentioned in the gun "debate."
Thanks, I also did not know that.
