It was frightening (she was then in her 30s), and the doctor told me that if she had waited another hour to seek help about her eye, she would have lost the sight in it. My sister hesitated because she is tough and hopes it will "work itself out". That and the fucking surgeon who did the surgery (he had photos on the wall of his office showing he did surgery on Mother Teresa), took what her crappy insurance paid AND THEN charged her another $8,000. She paid it off little by little over the next 12 years. After her retina was re-attached, about less than a decade later, she developed a cataract in that eye. Had surgery for that as well. Was charged out he wazoo as well. Sigh.

His condition has not changed; and we are of course, heartbroken. He has spent about 100 days in the hospital this year as both in patient and out. We are taking it day by day.

I listened to a great Sheerpost blog with Charles Derber and Yale Maghrass regarding the founding fathers, who I have tossed aside as better propagandists far better than anyone Bernays. I learned that Jefferson was a student of the Magna Carta, which did not usher in democracy, but rather the taking of power from the monarchy for the elites. Think about it. When is the last time you saw an elite go to FB jail for stating mis- or disinformation? Or a president, other elected official, or representatives of the Deep State? When the people rise up, they need to burn the Dec of Ind and the Constitution. But until then, let's use them as best we can to foment rebellion. And Cindy, don't beat yourself up about voting for Kerry. I can't imagine the horror of losing a son to war. I was fortunate--I could vote for Nader and I did. But can you remember when one vote mattered anywhere? We can't change the past but we better be able to change the future if there is any hope for the planet and the people.

Speaking of "that dumb", as you know by now, I shamelessly talk about my well-meaning and goodhearted but politically hopeless older (and only) sister M. behind her back; she and her spouse are typical progressive-liberal True Believers in The New York Times, NPR, and remaining loyal to the Democratic Party of Judas and its ostensible "lesser-evil" candidates.
I haven't checked in lately, but last time the subject came up I discovered that M. still feels passionately wronged and betrayed by Ralph Nader because of the 2000 election debacle. Needless to say (which never stops me), at the time she uncritically bought into the conventional script that condemned Nader as a "self-centered", egotistical "spoiler".
Given her cut-and-dried dogma mandating support for the Democratic "lesser evil" candidate, she obviously didn't even "hear", much less respect, Nader's eloquently-expressed critique of the status quo, and his rationale for daring to join the race in 2000. M.'s pain was exacerbated because she admired Nader's work over the decades-- still, her legacy respect wasn't enough to confer a modicum of open-mindedness.
In a way, it was a precursor to her acute TDS: in 2000, for M. it boiled down to "Nader bad!" 🤨

So happy to hear you are on the mend Cindy. My younger sister had a detached retina about 20 years ago. It was frightening (she was then in her 30s), and the doctor told me that if she had waited another hour to seek help about her eye, she would have lost the sight in it. My sister hesitated because she is tough and hopes it will "work itself out". That and the fucking surgeon who did the surgery (he had photos on the wall of his office showing he did surgery on Mother Teresa), took what her crappy insurance paid AND THEN charged her another $8,000. She paid it off little by little over the next 12 years. After her retina was re-attached, about less than a decade later, she developed a cataract in that eye. Had surgery for that as well. Was charged out he wazoo as well. Sigh.

I have a mild cataract in each eye, but, my surgeon says that I should NOT get them corrected until they cause vision problems. Besides this retina thing, my vision is 20/20.
Every day is a challenge, as you know. Tim got final approval from the Make A Wish Foundation just this past Monday. He is excited to decide where he wants to go. His condition has not changed; and we are of course, heartbroken. He has spent about 100 days in the hospital this year as both in patient and out. We are taking it day by day.

Ha! I had forgotten that Kerry had been dubbed "Lurch" ages ago. I ruefully acknowledge that the nickname is apposite, but it always bothered me a bit because, like Wednesday Addams, I LIKE Lurch.
So I intended to post that I think you owe Lurch an apology. Then I kept reading, and was delighted to see that, once again, synchronicity struck-- you rendered my remonstrance superfluous. 🏚️🕸
To tack on a tangent: I'm sorry to say that I began cooling off on Dennis Kucinich when he endorsed candidate Kerry in 2004. This is the great evil of partisanship, or one of them: when a bogus party-approved candidate salutes and announces that he is "reporting for duty", even ostensibly contrarian "mavericks" like Kucinich are compelled to stand at attention and salute too. 🤨
I started voting for Ralph Nader in 2000, and he never made me regret it. I'm still mad I got tricked into voting for Kerry in 2004, and he made me regret it on election night. I was really wavering on my committment to boycott Democrats along with Republicans, because Dubya was so awful. Online people were saying we had to show solidarity against Dubya, which sounded urgent to me. What put me over to Kerry was reading his famous Winter Soldier testimony from about 1971. I thought no one could change THAT much. Ha ha. Boy was I wrong. Or aliens transplanted his brain. Or someone else wrote it.
And to add insult, Kerry had been responding to a lot of complaints about the 2000 election being stolen, by saying over and over that he would NOT concede the election until every vote was counted. His running mate John Edwards gave a speech on election night repeating their promise not to concede. Then literally an hour later Kerry conceded. What a tool.
I remember some details because it made me change my voter registration party.
