On Flag Day, I reflect on the Sky Cloth that we are conditioned to worship. beginning when we enter “kinnygarden” with dimples on our little knuckles, still, we were gently forced to put our little hands over our young and naive hearts and pledge allegiance to (what looked like to me) a large Towel on a Stick.

The indoctrination didn’t work all that well on me revealed on the day that I got in bad trouble in Miss MacMurray’s 2nd grade class. I was one of Miss MacMurray’s pets, so this was very jarring. It’s almost six-decades ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

It was 1964 at the height of the Cold War and my teacher asked her combo class of 2nd and 3rd graders this abusive question: “What would you do if a ‘Red Communist’ came up to you and told you that he would shoot you in the head if you said the Pledge of Allegiance?” I confidently raised my hand and after I was called upon, with my entire tiny chest, I said, “I wouldn’t say it!!” Well, that was not the appropriate answer for a Cold War patriot-tot, and, for the first and last time as a 2nd grader, I was ushered into the bad-corner for my sin against the Towel on a Stick.

At this point in history, the US was becoming more involved in Southeast Asia and my feelings began to clarify and I think my 2nd grade self has been validated.

I wrote this a few years ago on Flag Day. Please let me know if any other country has an entire day to worship their Towels on Sticks:
