anything produced by Val Lewton--(the original Cat People, Leopard Man, I walked with a Zombie, etc) They masquerade as grade B flicks but are absolutely haunting. I walked with a Zombie is, in fact, all about colonialism. Other Lewton faves are "Bedlam" and "The Body Snatcher." Strange & wonderful.
My first horror movie was The Mummy with Boris Karloff and John Carradine. I was nine and had nightmares for months. I do not like horror movies, especially the ones that are well written, acted and directed. The Alien was one such. I saw it in a theater. I was intrigued because of Sigourney Weaver. When things are done well I really get into them and suffer from suspension of disbelief. I was traumatized. I will never watch it again. If Sigourney acted nude, I might, but only streaming so I could skip the scary parts.
For me, the worst horror movie was Brazil. The imagery was so disturbing that I never watched another. Terry Gilliam again. I had nightmares about those tubes. I got the point of the movie and it was an important point, but it could have been done in a way that would make people want to remember the movie. I actually like The Omen. I didn't like the ending but I liked the movie The Omen. It came out about the same time as the Exorcist and The Omen was a much better movie. After all the hype, I actually found The Exorcist boring. I understand that some really weird stuff happened on the set while they were filming The Omen. The dogs went out of control and started attacking. Peck's plane was struck by lightning and three people involved in the filming (including the executive producer) were struck by lightning. That is the only one of the movies on your list that I saw.
Very good points and we are in agreement about the time exorcist and the omen. Also I've never seen Brazil but I adore Gillian's Time Bandits. Thanks Ruth!
I have "The Black Cat" on either a Karloff or Lugosi compilation DVD. Ulmer was out of German Expressionism and I believe directed "Detour," (1945), an all-time film noir.
I was half way through when I remembered it was a TV movie.
Some good moments. My understanding is that it was a pilot for an offshoot/equivalent of Twilight Zone but a horror/occulty version... Anyway it did seem that they might have been introducing the (great) dynamic between Mrs Finch and Orion to be an ongoing thing. I think that could have been a good series :-]] Then we could have had another off-shoot "Mrs Finch Alone" where she has to battle forces she finally is forced to believe in ( or something 🙄 :-]] )
One last thing ( this is getting very lonnng sorry!!) I went to see Heretic with Hugh Grant a day or so ago. I knew absolutely nothing about it except that he was in it and it is a horror film.
>>Definitely<< worth a watch when you get the chance.
*one *last thing !! If you haveny seen Brazil please do - I think it is an extraordinary film. All that Gilliam stuff one loves but really very dark ( not a horror at all except insofar as 1984 Orwell is horror)
I have seen Brazil a long time ago. I have seen reviews of Heretic and heard it was good.
I read the synopsis on the YouTube about The Ghost of Sierra Cobre about it being a pilot. I could see that it was heading that way with the supporting characters. The housekeeper was awesome. Too bad it wasn't made into a show. I think it was going to be called The Haunted---which would not have been an anthology series like the Twilight Zone.

thanks! i haven't seen any of those.
Absolutely
Watched a lot of horror movies growing up but the only one that gave me nightmares was Lord of the Flies.

Let me know what you think...I have it up on my tool bar if you think it's worth watching.
Love this topic! For some more recent eerie films, try Guillermo del Toro's 'Pan's Labyrinth' and 'Crimson Peak', visually dazzling and atmospheric.
