Unbelievable, what we're living through. All those dystopian novels, tv shows, movies I previously enjoyed...I can no longer stand to look at any of them...we're living it.
I'm a long-retired state worker: a claims examiner, then an appeals referee, for the Pennsylvania unemployment compensation agency. My older colleagues almost all acquired that "storm trooper" attitude of being harshly unsympathetic to the claimants we serviced. Thus, especially in the early years, I was sometimes teased or gently scolded for being a bleeding-heart "soft touch"-- a pushover.
I mention this to say that for all of my inclination and reputation for being "too" forgiving, I absolutely despise the supposedly enlightened, humanitarian piety of reflexively "letting bygones be bygones", "letting go" of the burning desire to hold criminals and heinous wrongdoers to account, and instead wisely preferring to "forgive and forget".
The legitimate and authentic desire to achieve social justice is thus waved away as inappropriately clinging to bitter (or "petty") vindictiveness. Eff that shit, I say. 😡
