Are you a New Year’s Reso-loser? You know, someone whose resolutions have lost their resolve already? Well don’t despair, there’s always hope, because if there weren’t always hope, then what’s left would be despair. So, resolve to have hope.
I hope you can keep your resolutions because I never could keep mine. Most years, by January 15, I’d already lost the sheet of paper I wrote my resolutions on, if I ever wrote any to begin with, and anyway by the end of the month I’d forgotten what they all were already.
One year I resolved to get in shape, but I had neglected to specify what kind of shape, and I ended up in sorry shape indeed. One thing I never did resolve was to quit smoking, but I’m not sure if that counts because I never smoked in the first place.
Here is the secret to keeping resolutions: make only resolutions that you can keep and that means keeping the piece of paper that you write them on. I know some people who tattooed their resolutions right on their body, but their resolutions were just to get tattoos. Flaking out on a resolution like that is not only difficult but painful.
How many of you made resolutions last year to eat every day and sleep every night? Hah! I’ll bet none of you did, and yet if you did, I’d venture to say that you kept those resolutions quite nicely, thank you.
OK, I think I’ve given you enough pointers on how not to be a New Year’s Reso-loser. Let’s summarize: resolve to do what you know you’re going to do anyway, be specific, make it painful to flake out, and remember to have hope.
The last New Year's resolution I (unsuccessfully) made was over twenty years ago. It was to "learn to disagree well." While I've gotten better on listening more deeply, my rage and fuck you's get in the way too often. Still a good idea to work on it, though.
What's been much more rewarding is my wife and I doing "the year in review." We each look over our daily planner and remind ourselves of the many things we've done and had happened, from the mundane to the deep, from the personal to the political, from the individual to the family to the community, from the good, the bad, and the ugly. Invariably, we remark on just how incredibly rich life was, in all its shades.
And just as invariably, how vital it is to "live the resistance," to be in joy even when it's hard, especially when it's hard.
I never seriously got into the "New Year's resolution" thing, being a chap of minimal inherent "resolve". (Ugh, I accidently echoed "Operation Inherent Resolve", the US military's comic-book title for the invasion of Syria in 2014.)
At the risk of offering a dubious pop-psychology insight, I suspect that one must actually first acquire, or harbor, a wish, then a will, to do or stop doing something; it may germinate unconsciously. It's a bit like becoming pregnant, except that often the pre-resolution mindset is triggered by some convenient external factor to actualize into a full-fledged "resolution".
For instance, my dad quit smoking, cold turkey, on a long-ago Ash Wednesday-- hmmm, I didn't even think of the "ash" double-entendre unti now. But I'm pretty sure that he'd been bugged by my mom and other relatives for a long while to quit, and giving up cigarettes for Lent crystallized that latent proto-resolve.
I was young enough to be mildly disappointed that I would no longer have the thrill of occasionally lighting his Lucky Strikes; I never was interested in smoking tobacco products, but OTOH I've never been bothered or outraged by "secondary smoke". 🚬
On Christmas Eve afternoon, I was reading the latest report concerning the UN Security Council shucking and jiving over formulating some resolution to "speed up aid delivery to Palestine". I had been bitching and ranting to my brother J. about the way Western governments, international organizations like the UN, "human rights" NGOs, and Western mass-media seemed to regard the Gaza genocide from 10,000 feet in the air, as they plodded along with erratic baby steps-- mostly sideways or backwards.
I'd told J. that this brought to mind the Polish (IIRC) people-- would-be "innocent bystanders"-- in the Holocaust documentary "Shoah" plaintively explaining that "We saw the smoke rising from the camps. But we didn't know what it was!" So on Christmas Eve I followed up with this:
The present catastrophe is even worse, because even "alternative" media and the UN ARE paying attention to the smoke, except now they certainly DO know "what it is". But they're contemplating it in their own good bureaucratic time, and foostering around as they grope towards a "resolution" that will be as favorable as possible to the rogue, criminal government of Israel. Gaza is a particularly horrible conflict; one wants to shake the Israelis and say: "This is the 21st century guys, so knock it off!" I have settled on the formulation that Israel is a Pet Projection of the Western Imperium, as the Palestinians stand in for all people of the "Global South." It's a case of absolute Tyranny, and anti-Human in the extreme. The problem I see going forward is that Israel's genocide is sowing the seeds of Violence for decades to come. On a more hopeful note: This could be the last of the Middle Eastern wars, as Israel condemns itself to oblivion through its psychopathic behavior.
I was watching a Chris Hedges video Youtube, Dec. 9th, about the Genocide in Gaza, and he mentions at the end of his talk one hour, 30 minutes, an audienece member asked question what can we do as a "republic"? He responded organize, power in numbers and that he was working on a Strike, with? could not understand the name clearly, "Sean? shawn Hasselin? Hassalan?" Any Union reps that sound like this name? Unions have called for a "ceasefire" on Democracy Now, but is that really enough? I don't think so. I feel the same anxiety, but I also feel I must do "something", if not, that causes me even more anxiety! If Satanyahu, lunatic, sadistic vile evil twisted Demon, gets away with Genocide on Indigenous people, who is next?! This evil prickkk needs to be charged with war crimes against humanity. Are you a New Year’s Reso-loser? You know, someone whose resolutions have lost their resolve already? Well don’t despair, there’s always hope, because if there weren’t always hope, then what’s left would be despair. So, resolve to have hope.
I hope you can keep your resolutions because I never could keep mine. Most years, by January 15, I’d already lost the sheet of paper I wrote my resolutions on, if I ever wrote any to begin with, and anyway by the end of the month I’d forgotten what they all were already.
One year I resolved to get in shape, but I had neglected to specify what kind of shape, and I ended up in sorry shape indeed. One thing I never did resolve was to quit smoking, but I’m not sure if that counts because I never smoked in the first place.
Here is the secret to keeping resolutions: make only resolutions that you can keep and that means keeping the piece of paper that you write them on. I know some people who tattooed their resolutions right on their body, but their resolutions were just to get tattoos. Flaking out on a resolution like that is not only difficult but painful.
How many of you made resolutions last year to eat every day and sleep every night? Hah! I’ll bet none of you did, and yet if you did, I’d venture to say that you kept those resolutions quite nicely, thank you.
OK, I think I’ve given you enough pointers on how not to be a New Year’s Reso-loser. Let’s summarize: resolve to do what you know you’re going to do anyway, be specific, make it painful to flake out, and remember to have hope.

The last New Year's resolution I (unsuccessfully) made was over twenty years ago. It was to "learn to disagree well." While I've gotten better on listening more deeply, my rage and fuck you's get in the way too often. Still a good idea to work on it, though.
What's been much more rewarding is my wife and I doing "the year in review." We each look over our daily planner and remind ourselves of the many things we've done and had happened, from the mundane to the deep, from the personal to the political, from the individual to the family to the community, from the good, the bad, and the ugly. Invariably, we remark on just how incredibly rich life was, in all its shades.
And just as invariably, how vital it is to "live the resistance," to be in joy even when it's hard, especially when it's hard.
I never seriously got into the "New Year's resolution" thing, being a chap of minimal inherent "resolve". (Ugh, I accidently echoed "Operation Inherent Resolve", the US military's comic-book title for the invasion of Syria in 2014.)
At the risk of offering a dubious pop-psychology insight, I suspect that one must actually first acquire, or harbor, a wish, then a will, to do or stop doing something; it may germinate unconsciously. It's a bit like becoming pregnant, except that often the pre-resolution mindset is triggered by some convenient external factor to actualize into a full-fledged "resolution".
For instance, my dad quit smoking, cold turkey, on a long-ago Ash Wednesday-- hmmm, I didn't even think of the "ash" double-entendre unti now. But I'm pretty sure that he'd been bugged by my mom and other relatives for a long while to quit, and giving up cigarettes for Lent crystallized that latent proto-resolve.
I was young enough to be mildly disappointed that I would no longer have the thrill of occasionally lighting his Lucky Strikes; I never was interested in smoking tobacco products, but OTOH I've never been bothered or outraged by "secondary smoke". 🚬

On Christmas Eve afternoon, I was reading the latest report concerning the UN Security Council shucking and jiving over formulating some resolution to "speed up aid delivery to Palestine". I had been bitching and ranting to my brother J. about the way Western governments, international organizations like the UN, "human rights" NGOs, and Western mass-media seemed to regard the Gaza genocide from 10,000 feet in the air, as they plodded along with erratic baby steps-- mostly sideways or backwards.
I'd told J. that this brought to mind the Polish (IIRC) people-- would-be "innocent bystanders"-- in the Holocaust documentary "Shoah" plaintively explaining that "We saw the smoke rising from the camps. But we didn't know what it was!" So on Christmas Eve I followed up with this:
The present catastrophe is even worse, because even "alternative" media and the UN ARE paying attention to the smoke, except now they certainly DO know "what it is". But they're contemplating it in their own good bureaucratic time, and foostering around as they grope towards a "resolution" that will be as favorable as possible to the rogue, criminal government of Israel. They're essentially dithering around over a mega-atrocity instead of racing to the scene like fire trucks and ambulances racing to a conflagration in order to extinguish it and rescue survivors.
I know perfectly well that even under ideal circumstances, bureaucracies are simply not designed to respond swiftly and decisively, much less do the right thing no matter how obvious it is. But it's infuriating to watch the professionals almost languidly focusing on the debacle.
Recently, and more than once, some pundits have approvingly cited Ronald Reagan's 1982 response to Israel's bombing and war against Lebanon. Supposedly, even Reagan was appropriately horrified, and by several accounts did pick up the telephone and bluntly present Menachem Begin with the ultimatum to either "Cut it out, now!" or face an immediate drastic loss of US financial support. Begin complied.
Now, the Ghost of Joe Biden (Barely) Present, and/or the Nazgûl minions acting on his behalf, are openly greenlighting Israel's genocide, apart from murmured pleas to Israel to try to practice restraint-- i.e., not make the wanton mass murder and destruction so obvious. You know, for the sake of the OPTICS.
I know that the malignant overclass has dragged us Through the Looking-Glass into dystopia, aka "the world turn'd upside-down". But I'm still conflicted when I find myself nostalgically wishing that good old war criminal Ronald Reagan was sitting on the Oval Office Throne instead of the abominable Biden. 😡
