Even though I no longer consider myself “Christian,” I still vibe with many Carols from my stint in many Midnight Masses over the years.

This season, though, our celebrations have been dampened by the continuing slaughter in Gaza; the US economy, and a feeling of existential dread. But, tonight, I will welcome my three surviving children, in-laws and grandchildren to feel the warmth of family and bask in love while my heart is with all suffering and occupied peoples of the world.

Since Casey was killed in Iraq in 2004, we have had to reinvent what the holidays mean to us. So, we gather now and celebrate “Festivus” since none of us are religious, which still looks a lot like Xmas Eve with gifts, good food, and lots of fun.

It’s a holiday for the Rest of Us!

I hope all of you reading this have the best days today, and tomorrow, whatever you do to celebrate, or not celebrate.

The Palestinians will never be too far from our hearts as Israel has transformed the “Holy Land,” into an unholy hell for almost two-million people—where this very holy day will not be celebrated by the Christians there, or their celebrations will be very muted.
