I finally got a chance to watch this show, another excellent one. I'd forgotten about your trip to Cuba. My husband and I lived in Panama for 5 years, so we were able to go from there to Cuba with some other American friends in 2012. We just loved it. The people were wonderful. We all usually told them we were Canadians, but when I admitted I was American to one shop owner, he said he liked the U.S. I said "Why would you? They've done nothing but hurt your country." Then he admitted, "You're right, I don't like it." Kind of funny, not funny.
Cindy, I watched your speech at the CHD conference. Very powerful without being forceful. One statement you made, seemingly offhandedly, has stuck with me ever since: "If I had spent more time caring about ALL the children of the world, and not just my own child, maybe he would still be alive."
That statement hit me hard, and I cried and still cry thinking about it. I don't know how you got it out without breaking down. WOW.
It's been almost nineteen years. Some days I wouldn't be able to say that without crying, but it did touch a lot of people, I have heard from many. Thanks for your comment, compassion, and support.
I appreciated your pink washing discussion. Maybe the musicians I enjoy should stay away and cancel their performances in my vicinity. Assuming I’m willing to pay the price of admission, should they perform for me? I pay taxes. I participate in this worse than imperfect economic system. I am an part — an unwilling part — of the WMD distribution and climate destruction and environmental degradation.
The calls for the performers to boycott serve the purpose of bringing attention to critical issues, but maybe a performance that includes the issues of contention would have a similar or greater impact.
