I've always opposed drafts. My dad used to testify for conscientious objectors. He was a minister ( a good one that only believed in positive stuff and that hell was merely a mistranslation). What happened to young people was horrific during Vietnam. My cousin Philip was forced to go over there. After he came back, he was so depressed. He committd suicide after saying Americans would be shocked if they knew what was going on over there.
Now, I'm looking at the fact that so many are dying in foreign lands because of our actions and there is no vestment on the part of Americans. It's as if the more that die, the more irrelevant it becomes to most people. Sort of like,," Oh, five thousand people died today and so what interesting shows are on TV tonight." Maybe, if there is another draft, enough will stand up to get all the wars called off. But then a lot of good individuals could die because they don't know how to get out of being drafted.

Even from a conservative business perspective, the massive money we are pouring into the military-industrial-intelligence complex is creating a stunted business environment. Assuming there is a "healthy" capitalism (which can be debated) the over-investment in DOD-driven sectors is thwarting the growth of all other business environments. It is limiting opportunities in non-military, security or intelligence fields.
In one example out of many, recent studies show interest in civil engineering as a career is at an all-time low. Our country desperately needs civil engineers. We need to communicate to young adults that this profession is critical to our country's future. Yet college students and young professionals learn there is no respect for this field. The pay in the field has not kept up with inflation. Apparently, it is almost absurdly low sometimes. I work as a technical writer, which is a demanding role, but does not require the kind of educational commitment engineering requires. However, there are apparently young civil engineers who are paid the same or even less than a technical writer. (And we are support staff to engineers)
However, if you look at engineering job postings by private military-related firms - they advertise the highest salaries in the country for engineering and technology roles. These salaries are often double those of roles in other sectors.
We are starving the non-military related US business sectors and creating a nation without the resources for innovation and creativity in civil life. If we want to help disillusioned people, we should build a diverse, thriving economy that provides fulfilling civil opportunities for employment.

My gal Grace attended a rural Missouri high school where she was subjected to a military intelligence test in the early 1990s, post Iraq-Attack-One, when TV Screens were posted in the school building promoting that version of the Middle Eastern War that never stops. She can tell the story better, but because she scored high, every night for months at dinner time some one from the recruitment office would call the family phone, requesting her allegiance/conscription. Needless to say, she answered the phone and refused to heed that MIC Siren's call.
