Yes indeed! Along with work at two local organic farms, I shepherd the donations of extra produce to our local free pantry, which often overflows into the surrounding four counties' pantries. I've held a couple seed swaps and a "build the local cash economy" meeting. But the big project this year is turning the lawn into a garden. We were reluctant because it's a rental situation, but it has turned out to be empowering. A ton of potatoes are up and numerous other vegetables are on their way, along with our raspberries - and hopefully melons this year. It definitely has built relations with neighbors too, and adds immeasurably to the quality of our life. It also helps bridge the gap of wondering what to do amid the collapsing empire, until we figure out what else to do next <3

It's like most things - finding some folks with common interest (I use word of mouth, meetup groups, and flyers at the library). Often a progressive or green group might have a yard available - sometimes a church has extra space. Then just get a couple people who love to dig. The soil is tough in spots in the West, so some people just bring in soil and compost and leaf mulch, some do sheet mulching or lasagne beds, some pick axe or plow through - there are a few methods that can work. It is amazing to watch stuff grow, and to get beginning gardeners going. One good contact are these folks who have garden blitzes up in Butte County, where they install dozens of gardens every spring - https://bclocalfood.org/ I am happy to connect further around this!
