SheeLilly#46: We Are the Change

Think Global, Act Local to Make the World a Better Place

This week on SheeLilly#46, Cindy and Dakotah take on the IMF—the International Monetary Fund, and the harm it does all over the world, especially the Global South.

We also discuss the criminal activities of Economic Hitmenm, coups, assassinations, and the “color” revolutions perpetrated by the CIA, mostly.

We the people of the world really are in this together, and the motto of SheeLilly is the old, but true adage:

“Think global, act local.”

Let's get real for a second. In a world filled with political and social strife, it can be tough to figure out how to make a difference. Some might argue that there's little we can do to change the world, and even less we can do to change our local communities; but, not SheeLilly. After all, if we each do just a little bit to make our communities better, imagine how different the world could be. So here are five things we can do today to make our little corner of the world a better place.

1. Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer. There's no better way to make an impact in your community than to volunteer your time and energy. There are countless organizations out there that could use a helping hand, whether it's a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, a community garden, a blood drive or a school. Not sure where to start? Try a quick Google search for volunteer opportunities in your area.

2. Get LOCALLY politically active. We know, We know...politics can be a drag. But guess what? The decisions that local politicians make impact our daily lives in a big way. And the more people who show up to local elections and vote, the more our communities will reflect our values. So call your representatives, attend town hall meetings and hit the polls. And educate yourself about the issues so you know where you stand.

3. Support local businesses. We've all heard the phrase "vote with your dollars," and it really is true. By supporting local businesses, you help keep money in your community, create jobs and boost the local economy. Plus, it feels good to know that you're helping out your neighbors. So next time you need groceries, skip the big box store and head to your local farmer's market. And next time you need a new book, skip Amazon and hit up your local indie bookstore.

4. Be a good neighbor. This one's easy, but it goes a long way. Smile and say hello to your neighbors. Offer to help out with yard work or house sitting. Organize a block party. Little gestures of kindness and community building can go a long way towards making our communities better places to live.

5. Be a "conscious consumer". Okay, what the heck does that mean? Essentially, it means being mindful of the impact that your actions and purchases have on the world around you. Choose sustainable, eco-friendly products. Shop at companies that align with your values. Use public transportation or carpool instead of driving solo. Every little choice we make can have a ripple effect on the world, so make yours count. (i.e.; Cindy last owned an auto in 2007, and for 16-years she has traveled by foot, bicycle, and public transportation).

Let's face it - the world can be a tough and scary place sometimes. But that doesn't mean we're powerless to make a difference. By volunteering, supporting local businesses and being good neighbors, we can create vibrant, caring and sustainable communities. So go out there and make a difference! And remember - we're all in this together.

Let us know what you do to make your part of the world a better place! Give us all some direction, and inspiration.

We at SheeLilly believe that one way to combat global strife it to go out of our comfort zone and be active and proactive.
