This sanitized emphasis on submissive, compliant "service" fortuitously leaves no room for the possibility that any decent, responsible kid might be out there dabbling in radical counterculture, or actually agitating for social change as King did. Instead, they are adjured to meekly and reverently line up like choir members to perform civic "service" in honor of King's memory-- as if King's message is "Help to row the boat, don't rock it!"

Afterword: today, January 15, 2024, I had the bitter déjà vu experience of beginning my day with the local newsradio's pious glurge extolling the MLK "Day of Service" holiday. Every time I tuned in at the top of the hour for news of an impending snowstorm, I was treated to newsreaders chirping approvingly about MLK-inspired volunteers "rolling up their sleeves" while performing community service.

The war machine was in full swing and never budged a split second. The war was based on lies. Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. The brother in Law of Saddam Hussein left Iraq and went to Jordan. He was immediately debriefed by the American Ambassador in Amman, Jordan. He told the Americans that Saddam Hussein did not have any weapons of Mass Destruction. The Atomic Weapons' inspector Hans Blix had the same message to the Americans that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction
In addition, Iraq had nothing to do with 911. Saddam Hussein hated and despised Usama Bin Laden. The rush to war was to destroy Iraq's military capability, to destroy its social structure of free education and free health care for all. America cannot stand educated Arab Nations. These would be a threat to its darling nation Israel. It sent our sons to fight an illegal war, against the will of the United Nation.
